Fasching
Last week was Fasching (Fastnacht, Karneval, carneval), a holiday that is based on Germanic traditions. It's supposed to chase out the winter and scare it away. People disguise and celebrate in street parades. As it was finals week for us, we didn't join the festivities. Fasching lasts several days and usually the stores are closing in the afternoons. As it is a candy holiday, kids truly love it. For grown-ups there is a lot of drinking involved (as Uncle Rick already knows) and the goal is to let yourself go for a few days before lent starts on Ash 
Wednesday! My sister Jasmin took these pictures of her kids. Reminder: She has five kids. Their names (in the order of birth) are: Ruben, Micha, Annika, Phillipp and Lea.

Marissa, thanks for fleshing out the holiday picture, as we experienced only the adult version on our last visit to Germany. Now the outlandish costumes on the adults make sense!
these would seem more outlandish if this wasn't the kind of clothes I would see the hipsters in at the bar on the weekends. I finally know where they are getting their inspiration.
The puppy dog sweetie is supposed to be scary? Or is it just an opportunity to dress and get candy similar to Halloween?
It's all about the candy. You can disguise as anything. When I was that age, most guys wanted to go as an Indian or as a Cowboy. Girls were often princesses.
The kiddos are so cute - and matching costumes - love the little ones look at older brother.
are they pirates of the carribean? that was huge this halloween here.
I think the whole pirate mania was in general fueled by "Flucht der Karibik" or Pirates of the Caribbean.
